TRIPOLI, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- The former security chief of the Libya's capital Tripoli survived an assassination attempt on Sunday in front of his home but was severely injured, an official told Xinhua.

"Gen. Salah al-Smu'i survived an assassination attempt after gunmen fired heavily at him in front of his house in Tripoli," the official with the Interior Ministry said on condition of anonymity.

"Al-Smu'i suffered severe injuries and was transferred to the hospital," the official said, adding that his condition is currently stable.

Three weeks ago, the newly-appointed Interior Minister Fathi Bashagha relieved al-Smu'i of his duty and appointed Salem Gremida as the new security chief of Tripoli.
