KHARTOUM, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- At least 14 people were killed and 37 others injured in a traffic accident on Tuesday in Sudan's North Darfur State, Ashorooq net reported.

The accident took place at Um Kadada area in North Darfur State when a bus, en route to the Sudanese capital Khartoum, overturned, the report said.

"The injured people were sent to Um Kadada hospital for medical treatment," Mohamed Osman Ibrahim, commissioner of Um Kadada locality, was quoted in the report as saying.

Many of them were with serious injuries, according to the medics.

Director of North Darfur State's Traffic Police, Ahmed Mohamed Hamid, confirmed the death of 14 passengers, including four women and ten men.

He said the front tyre of the bus exploded, leading to the bus swerve off the track and overturn.

Sudan is among countries of the highest death rates in traffic accidents, mainly due to careless driving, crumbling roads and poor vehicle scrapping system.

Citizens complain about poor road conditions while the Sudanese Ministry of Roads and Bridges attributes the accidents to overloaded trucks and high speed.

Sudan's Interior Ministry recently said that it was working out new plans to reduce traffic accidents, including installation of radars to monitor speed on highways.
