LUSAKA, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- The following are news highlights in Zambia's major media outlets on Monday.

-- The Zambian government has bought medicines worth 35 million U.S. dollars to stabilize the drug supply chain in the country for the whole of 2019, a senior official has said.

Minister of Health Chitalu Chilufya said the medicines were bought this month. (Zambia Daily Mail)

-- Hundreds of international truckers who go in and out of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) through Zambia are preparing for a long wait at the border after DRC authorities shut it for elections which were held on Sunday, Dec. 30.

Hundreds of trucks were stranded on the Zambian side of Kasumbalesa border post as offices on the DRC side were closed because of the general elections. (Times of Zambia)

-- Authorities in northwestern Zambia have impounded 20 trucks laden with mealie meal and other products destined for the Democratic Republic of Congo.

District Administrative Officer Oscar Mugala said each truck was carrying about 400 bags of either mealie meal or maize and expressed concern that unscrupulous people have continued smuggling the commodities despite a ban imposed by the government. (Daily Nation)

-- Zambian President Edgar Lungu says the governing Patriotic Front will continue ruling the country as long as the opposition parties remained disorderly.

Lungu said it was not an insult and taking Zambians for granted by his claims that he will rule up to 2026 and that another leader from the governing party will take over up to 2031, adding that the party will rule forever unless the opposition puts their house in order. (The Mast)
