WELLINGTON, Jan. 1 (Xinhua) -- New Zealand Governor-General Patsy Reddy urged New Zealanders to "lead the world again" in combating climate change in her New Year's message delivered on Tuesday.

Reddy called on New Zealanders to take responsibility for reducing their carbon footprint on the planet, helping the country meet its international commitments to combating climate change.

"Whether it's making changes to transport and energy, how we use land and water, or generate waste -- if we all work together, we can make a difference," Reddy said.

The governor-general also looked back on "some great New Zealanders" who were honored in 2018, as well as "anniversaries of events that impacted on our country and the wider world" in her New Year's message.

"In March, we launched the commemorations to mark 125 years since New Zealand led the world in achieving votes for women," she said while stressing New Zealand's leadership in this field.
