KABUL, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- The Afghan law enforcement agencies have sentenced 29 individuals in connection with drug-related crimes from one to 17 years in jail, a statement said Wednesday.

"In the past one week, 29 people involved in 18 cases of drug trafficking have been sentenced from one to 17 years, during open meeting of the primary and secondary courts of the Central Narcotics Tribunal (CNT), a judicial center," Afghan Counter-Narcotics Criminal Justice Task Force said in the statement.

Counter Narcotics Police and detective security organization arrested the suspected people on suspicion of trafficking 28 kg of heroin type drugs, 10 kg morphine, more than 1,401 kg of opium, 126 kg of hashish, 1 kg of crystal and 16,428 liters of chemical substance from different provinces of the country.

In 2017, some 9,000 tons of opium were produced in Afghanistan, a country notorious for growing opium-producing poppies for the illicit drug trade.
