SINGAPORE, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- Singapore stocks closed lower on Wednesday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) going down 0.97 percent or 29.87 points to close at 3038.89.
A total of 1.46 billion shares changed hands with a turnover of 762.9 million Singapore dollars (about 559.67 million U.S. dollars). Losers outnumbered gainers by 231 to 174.
The STI index went up 0.5 percent or 15.33 points to close at 3068.76 on Monday.
Stock trading at Singapore Exchange was suspended on Tuesday due to the New Year's day holiday.
