HO CHI MINH CITY, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- A tractor trailer crashed into nearly 20 motorbikes, which stopped at a traffic light in Vietnam's southern Long An province Wednesday afternoon, killing at least six people and injuring 22 others, local media reported.

The accident, involving the tractor trailer and 18 motorbikes on national road 1A, killed five people instantly and injured 23 others, of whom one died in hospital later, national radio station Voice of Vietnam (VOV) reported.

Seventeen motorbike riders and their companions had still been under treatment at hospitals, online newspaper VnExpress quoted provincial transport officials as saying on Wednesday afternoon.

The tractor trailer hit nearly 20 motorbikes when it crossed the red light, said the officials.

In 2018, Vietnam saw 18,232 traffic accidents which killed 8,125 people, and seriously injured 5,124 people and slightly wounded 9,070 others, posting year-on-year declines of 9.2 percent, 1.9 percent, 8.3 percent and 20.8 percent, the country's Traffic Police Department said on Wednesday.
