Two-year-old conjoined twin from Bangladesh in Budapest for surgery

BUDAPEST, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- The two-year-old conjoined twin from Bangladesh, Rabia and Rukai, arrived in Budapest on Saturday to go through a special surgery, the second of a series of three serious interventions, according to official sources here.

"Two-year-old Rabia and Rukai came to Hungary on Saturday to undergo the second surgery of their journey with the help of Hungarian doctors," the Semmelweis medical University announced in a statement.

"The first surgery, separating the different blood-vessels, took place in two interventions in Bangladesh, last February and August," the University explained. "This second intervention will be a plastic surgery, under which where tissues will have to be dilated," the statement added.

"Finally, the last and third operation will be the physical separation of bones of the cranium," according to the Semmelweis University.

The twins were born on July 16, 2016 in North Bangladesh, joined at the head. Mum Taslima Khatun Uno and husband Mohammed Rafiqul Islam didn´t know that the twins were conjoined until after the birth.

The second surgery will be performed by doctor Gergely Pataki, while the third will be conducted by a team of doctors under the supervision of Hungarian brain surgeon specialist doctor Andras Csokay. The location of the third surgery has not yet been disclosed.

The University informed the press, in order to ensure the best conditions for the twins, the family would currently prefer to avoid media, but the University is going to inform the public of the main steps of their journey.

The University concluded by reminding that the Hungarian doctor team was the only one in the world to undertake the extremely complex and difficult procedure.
