WELLINGTON, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- Dunedin in New Zealand's South Island will embrace electric scooters on streets, according to the Dunedin City Council on Wednesday.

The popular electric scooters, operated by California company Lime, are expected to launch in Dunedin on Thursday and are also destined for Queenstown, the local council said.

A Dunedin City Council spokesperson said the council recently met with the Lime scooter company as it prepares to roll out its e-scooters in the city.

Lime introduced electronic scooters in Auckland, the Hutt Valley of the Wellington region and Christchurch in October, with safety concerns arising such as riders receiving head injuries after a fall.

The spokesperson said the Dunedin City Council and Lime have developed an agreement on safety messaging and reporting incidents.

In November last year, New Zealand Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) received more than 80 claims relating to e-scooter injuries in Auckland.

E-scooters do not require registration or a driver license in New Zealand, but riders must be aged over 18 and are recommended to wear helmets.
