OSLO, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- The wife of a wealthy Norwegian businessman has been abducted and a ransom corresponding to 9 million euros (10.3 million U.S. dollars) has been demanded to be paid in cryptocurrency, local media reported.

Anne-Elisabeth Falkevik Hagen, 68, has been missing for ten weeks and the police's theory is that a kidnapping happened on Oct. 31, 2018, at the couple's home in Fjellhamar, some 15 km northeast of Oslo, the public broadcaster NRK reported.

Her husband Tom Hagen, a real estate investor and also aged 68, is at 172th place on a list of the country's 400 most wealthy people published by financial magazine Kapital. His fortune in 2018 is estimated at around 1.7 billion kroner (200 million U.S. dollars).

Police said her suspected kidnappers have demanded for ransom and serious threats have been made in this case.

Norway's VG newspaper, quoting unidentified sources, reported the ransom was 9 million euros in the Monero cryptocurrency.

Police did not confirm the figure for the ransom amount and advised the family not to pay, the report said.
