MADRID, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- The Director General of Valencia Football Club, Mateo Alemany on Thursday gave a strong vote of support to under-fire coach Marcelino Garcia Toral.

Alemany held a press conference two days after a 2-1 cup defeat to second tier Sporting Gijon followed hot on the heels of a league defeat to Alaves to leave Valencia just five points above the relegation zone.

The press have speculated that failure to beat fellow strugglers Valladolid in the Mestalla Stadium on Saturday could see Marcelino lose his job, despite leading the club to a 4th place finish last season.

Alemany told reporters that Marcelino had "just renewed" his contract. "He has a contract until 2020 and my desire is that he sees out his contract and, if it's possible, that he signs another one," he said.

He ruled out sacking Marcelino whatever the weekend result saying "a project is a project and it doesn't just come down to one match."

The Valencia Director General reminded those of Valencia's performances under Marcelino last season and although he admitted that in football "you often live in the present and the last result." He also said he didn't envisage the club "taking any short terms action in a sporting sense."

"I see how the dressing room is after games, I see how the players train and how much they demand of themselves. The results are coming, but there is no lack of commitment. It's clear we have a great coach," he said.

"We haven't made contact nor planned to make contact with any other coach," he insisted.
