ABUJA, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- No passenger was trapped or injured after a train fell off the tracks in a suburb of Lagos, Nigeria's most populous city, early Thursday, according to local officials.
Officials denied initial reports suggesting that the derailment had caused many passengers trapped and some others injured in the accident which occurred in the densely populated Agege neighborhood of Lagos.
A coach or two fell off the rail track, according to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency which blamed the incident on faulty tracks.
Fidet Okhiria, managing director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, told Xinhua that no passenger was trapped or injured as a result of the derailment.
"We have the technology to put back the coach or coaches on track. I assure you that would be done before the end of today (Thursday)," Okhiria briefly told Xinhua on his way to the scene of the incident.
In November 2017, several people were killed and many others injured when a train derailed in the same Agege neighborhood of Lagos.
Last July, a train rammed into a passenger bus in another part of Lagos, killing at least nine people.
The Nigerian government is currently revamping and revitalizing the nation's old and dilapidated legacy railway network.
