LAGOS, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- One person died in a train derailment in the early hours of Thursday in Lagos, Nigeria's economic hub, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) said.

The victim died at the hospital while receiving treatment, Jerry Ochi, the Lagos Railway district manager, told reporters.

The NRC officials have been working to re-rail the train and repair the track, Ochi said.

Hundreds of passengers escaped death when a mass transit shuttle train derailed at the Ashade railway crossing on the Agege-Ikeja corridor in Lagos. A coach or two fell off the rail track, according to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, blaming the incident on faulty tracks. The incident left some of the passengers injured.

In November 2017, several people were killed and many others injured when a train derailed in the same Agege neighborhood of Lagos.

Last July, a train rammed into a passenger bus in another part of Lagos, killing at least nine people.

The Nigerian government is currently revamping and revitalizing the nation's old and dilapidated railway network.
