ADDIS ABABA, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- A traffic accident in Ethiopia's Oromia regional state, located in the central part of the country, has left 17 people dead, local media reported on Monday.

Desalegn Tefera, Public Relations Head, Horo Guduru Zone Government Communication Office of Oromia regional state, said the traffic accident happened on Sunday evening when a transport bus travelling on the road overturned, leaving 17 people dead, reported state affiliated media outlet Fana Broadcasting Corporate (FBC).

Tefera said police has determined the cause of the traffic accident to be the transport bus carrying people beyond the vehicle's capacity. The transport bus was travelling on the road with a total of 45 people on board when the traffic accident occurred.

Despite having one of the lowest per capita car ownerships in the world, deadly traffic accidents in Ethiopia are common, with blames put on bad roads, a flawed driving license issuance system and lax enforcement of safety rules.
