MADRID, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- President of the Spanish Referees Technical Committee Carlos Velasco Carballo on Tuesday expressed his satisfaction with how the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system had worked over the first half of the season in Spain.
Carballo told a press conference at the headquarters of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), "VAR has been one of the most important changes in the history of football and we are happy with the fluidity of how the games have progressed and with its development."
Carballo explained that the first 19 weeks of the season have seen "190 games with 59 interventions from the VAR and 2,280 actions have been checked."
He also revised some of the most controversial incidents using the VAR so far this season and explained the decisions which had been taken.
"Referees make mistakes and VAR isn't perfect and it doesn't aim to eliminate all of the mistakes from the game, but the clear and manifest mistakes. The data shows we are improving and we can be proud of that," said Carballo.
"It's a huge change and we have adapted it in such a rapid and effective way here in Spain that we should be proud," he concluded.
