SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- San Francisco Mayor London Breed on Saturday called for more rights and social justice for women as thousands of protesters marched through downtown San Francisco as part of the third Women's March.

During the march, Breed praised the progress women have achieved in the U.S. Congress since the mid-term election last November.

"A record number of women, 35 women elected to the House of Representatives," she said.

She urged the demonstrators to uphold the legacy of U.S. civil rights leader Martin Luther King to get united and build a more inclusive society.

"We're celebrating his message, his message of tolerance, his message of inclusiveness, message of understanding and forgiveness, and ultimately his fight for love and equality," said the San Francisco mayor.

"If we want to make things better, it is time that we prepare the next generation. It's time we support them, we empower them, we encourage them," Breed said.

She later posted a tweet, saying that she joined thousands of women and allies across the nation to celebrate "all of the progress we have made since the first Women's March."

The demonstration was led by women's groups which are not satisfied with their status quo and want to empower women with more choices and freedoms.

The peaceful rally in San Francisco was held along with other demonstrations in cities across the Bay Area, including Oakland and San Jose.

It was the third year in a row for the marches, which began in January 2017.
