Senior U.S. senator holds talks with Pakistani PM

ISLAMABAD, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- Senior U.S. Republican senator Lindsey Graham, who arrived in Pakistan on Sunday, met with Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan.

The prime minister's office said Senator Graham conveyed his appreciation of Pakistan's positive role in the ongoing efforts to find a political settlement in Afghanistan.

Graham lauded that Khan's efforts to normalize relations with neighboring countries were noteworthy.

"Prime Minister reiterated his Government's commitment to continue working with the U.S. and other regional stakeholders to find a political settlement in Afghanistan. He underscored the need for normalizing relations with all neighboring countries to unleash the potential of regional cooperation," a statement from the PM's office said.

Graham is visiting Pakistan at the invitation of Pakistani foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi.

Qureshi also held talks with Graham and said peace and stability in Afghanistan is in Pakistan's interest as well as propitious for the progress of South Asia region.

Graham said the United States was appreciative of Pakistan's sincere efforts to facilitate the Afghan reconciliation process which was a priority of the Trump Administration. He underlined the long term U.S. commitment to the region.
