COLOMBO, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena on Monday launched a drug eradication week in all national schools across the island country to curb the spread of drugs, especially among students and youth.

Local media reports said the national week will be held from Jan. 21 to Jan. 28.

The programs and activities prepared for the week will be implemented in all schools from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. local time each day.

The drug eradication week will include activities held in classrooms educating students on the dangers of drug use, visits by parents to schools to join the students on drug prevention activities and educating children on the legal framework on drug abuse and prevention.

The drug eradication week will conclude on Jan. 28, with an awards ceremony held under the patronage of President Sirisena that will appreciate the work of officials who have successfully conducted drug raids.

President Sirisena last year launched a strong anti-drug campaign in the country aimed at ending the use of drugs by 2020.
