MOGADISHU, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- Two people were killed and five others were injured in a car bombing in Banadir, Mogadishu on Tuesday, officials said.

Mohamed Abdullahi Tulah, deputy governor for security in Banadir region, told journalists that a car filled with explosives detonated at a fuel station near the Ministry of Petroleum, killing two people and injuring five others.

"We can confirm that two people were killed in today's blast and we are establishing more details on the incident," Abdullahi said, noting that the emergency firefighters from Banadir managed to put off the fire before it could spread to nearby buildings.

He added that the security forces have managed to foil many attempts by the militants to launch terror attacks in the capital.

Witnesses said the explosion also damaged the fuel depot and buildings in the area and the exact target of the attack remains unclear.

"The blast was huge and we learnt a car parked at the Ministry of Petroleum near a security checkpoint in Mogadishu exploded, we heard that people were hurt in the attack," said Sadaq Osman, a resident.

The arrest came a day after the police killed a militant and arrested another in the same area on Monday.

No group has claimed responsibility for the latest attack but al-Qaida-affiliated group al-Shabab conducted similar attacks in the past.
