S.Korea's retail sale rises in 2018 on strong online sale

SEOUL, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- Retail sale in South Korea rose last year on strong sale in the cyberspace, a government report showed Wednesday.

Revenue of major retailers gained 6.8 percent in 2018 from a year earlier, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

Retail sale in the cyberspace jumped 15.9 percent on the introduction of dawn delivery of fresh vegetable and the convenience of online payment.

Offline sales by major department stores, discount outlets and convenient stores grew 1.9 percent last year.

Revenue by convenient stores expanded 8.5 percent as the number of stores gained to 35,676 in 2018 from 34,163 in the previous year amid the rising number of one-person households.

Department stores sale added 1.3 percent on demand for home appliance and furniture, while discount outlet sale dipped 2.3 percent on weak demand for food.
