BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- Practically all of Brunei's residents aged 13 and above use social networking sites, propelling the sultanate to the top of the world rankings for social media penetration for eligible populations.

According to the Digital 2019 report, published on Thursday by Hootsuite and We Are Social, Brunei is one of 12 countries where social media reaches 99 percent of the "eligible population," significantly higher than the Southeast Asian average of 71 percent.

The penetration rate of Brunei is the highest possible rate a country could get, with the report stating that the category is capped at 99 percent.

"We've capped our eligible penetration figures at 99 percent because it's unrealistic to expect that everybody in a country uses social media, and it's also likely that some of these users' will represent duplicate accounts," the report stated.

The report defines the eligible population of social media users as those aged 13 years old and above. Two other Southeast Asian countries Malaysia and the Philippines - share the honors of having the highest social media penetration rate for eligible populations.

Internet penetration in the sultanate was pegged at 94 percent, with 410,800 of its 436,700 residents having access.

Mobile phones were the gadgets of choice. The report placed mobile phone subscriptions in the country at 593,300, exceeding the population by 136 percent.

Singapore boasts having the fastest average fixed Internet connection speed of 190.9 Megabits per second.
