DAR ES SALAAM, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- Three leaders from member states of the East African Community (EAC) on Friday joined their host Tanzanian President John Magufuli for a summit in the northern tourist city of Arusha.

President Magufuli was joined by Presidents Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya, Yoweri Museveni of Uganda and Paul Kagame of Rwanda.

Burundi President Pierre Nkurunziza and his South Sudan counterpart Salva Kiir were represented by vice-president and foreign affairs minister, respectively.

The summit's timetable released by the EAC secretariat showed that among the agenda expected to dominate the meeting included endorsing Kenya to contest the membership of the Security Council of the United Nations for a period of 2021-2022.

The timetable also showed that the summit will receive a report on the process of Somalia to join the bloc and implementation of the Customs Union protocol.

The summit of the heads of state of the six-member EAC was postponed in November last year due to a lack of quorum.

Ugandan President Museveni, the chairman of the summit, announced the postponement of the summit to Dec. 27 after the absence of the representatives from Burundi. The summit could not be held again in December last year.
