NICOSIA, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades on Friday addressed a Chinese New Year message to the Chinese people, wishing them on a personal level, and also further progress for the People's Republic of China.

"I would like to extend my warmest wishes that the Chinese New Year, the Pig Year, will be filled with good health, success, happiness and prosperity for all Chinese people and their families," Anastasiades said in a video message.

He quoted from Confucius, saying that the strength of the nation derives from the integrity of the whole and added: "And I have no doubt that this year will also see China further continuing its inspiring economic growth and reform policy to the benefit of its people."

Anastasiades said Cyprus feels deeply grateful and at the same time fortunate for its close relationship with China.

"The relationship Cyprus and China have developed is one of sincere friendship which I am sure will further widen and deepen this year," he added.

"Xin Nian Kuai Le (Happy New Year)!" Anastasiades concluded by wishing the best for the Pig Year in English and Chinese.

The Year of the Pig in the Chinese lunar calendar will begin on Feb. 5, 2019.
