U.S. national nabbed for cultivating marijuana in apartment in Indonesia

JAKARTA, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian police have arrested a U.S. national for growing marijuana plants and processing them in an apartment in the country's capital Jakarta, police said on Thursday.

The 35-year-old American with an initial of LAC brought the seed of the plants from the United States and grew them in the apartment located in the heart of the city by using electrical light, vice director of narcotic division of the national police Senior Commissioner Krisno Siregar said in a statement on Thursday.

The officer said the police also found three marijuana plants with height of 30 cm, two others of 10 cm high, and another with height of 35 cm.

Two plastic bags containing dried marijuana leaf and stems weighing of 30 and 74 grams each were seized in the apartment of the U.S. citizen, who worked as a fitness trainer, said Siregar.

Growing marijuana is against the Indonesian narcotic law and carries a maximum penalty of 12 years in prison, according to the police.

Indonesia has been fighting against drug abuse, with dozens of drug offenders, including foreigners, having been sentenced to death.

President Joko Widodo has declared a war against drug abuses, saying that the country is in narcotic emergency as drug abuse cases are rampant.
