WINDHOEK, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- Namibian President Hage Geingob on Wednesday emphasized the need for his government to combat corruption and poverty and be accountable.

He was speaking at the official opening of the parliament of Namibia in the capital Windhoek.

"The sign of a fully functional democracy is the existence of robust and well-funded processes, systems and institutions. If parliamentary institutions are mistrusted and perceived to be corrupt, it places serious challenges on our democracy," Geingob said.

The Namibian head of state also added that there is a need to come up with programmes that improve trust in the governance architecture of the country.

"As government we have set ourselves high targets that we aim to achieve in our concerted drive towards a more prosperous Namibia. In addition we have declared a war in dealing with social ills." he said.
