ATHENS, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) -- Four persons went missing on early Sunday on Crete island and a search and rescue operation was underway, after torrential rains caused flooding mainly in rural areas, Greek national news agency AMNA reported,
A woman made a telephone call to the Fire Brigade that the car her husband was driving was being swept by waters of the overflowing Geropotamos river at the outskirts of Rethymno city on the northern part of the island, according to information so far.
She is among the missing, as well as her husband and her parents.
On Saturday firemen had rescued another woman from a similar situation.
The island was hit hard by the latest cold front sweeping Greece since last week, according to local authorities.
Ships were docked at ports until Saturday due to gale force winds, while farmers have reported a lot of damage due to flooding, according to AMNA.
