BANGKOK, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- The Thai Library Association (TLA) has jointed hands with the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) to launch a project by adopting "green" initiatives for less carbon emissions, according to local authorities.

According to a press statement released on Monday, over 600 libraries nationwide will participate in the project by promoting digital libraries, e-books, green travelling such as using bicycles and reducing the use of paper and plastic and recycling waste.

SET Senior Executive Vice President Krisada Sektrakul quoted by the statement, said that libraries can be learning centers that play vital roles in educating and communicating about climate change to the public.

This project has extended from Care the Bear project initiated last year to encourage Thai listed firms to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions.

Krisada also said during July to December 2018, SET and 33 capital-market organizations held several eco events, which have successfully reduced the emission of 1,472 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent to the amount obtained from growing approximately 163,509 trees.

He added that SET will be reaching out to allies this year in the public sector, private sector, and social sector with synergy to reduce the global warming effects to make better changes in tangible manners, including tree planting.

TLA Vice President Satramedhi Suwakhon Siriwongworawat said that the project will be instrumental in instilling public awareness about the need to mitigate climate change, especially among the youth and the public as a whole. This project expects to build knowledge of climate change for some 600,000 library visitors a year.

TLA and SET have also collaborated in organizing a workshop to help librarians and staff of the libraries to acquire more knowledge and better understand this issue to lead to concrete actions.
