KIEV, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman said on Monday that agricultural sector continues to be a main locomotive of the Ukrainian economy, according to a government press service.

Agriculture generates about 39 percent of Ukraine's currency earnings, spurring the country's economic growth, Groysman said.

Another pillar sector of the Ukrainian economy is metallurgy, which currently shows a steady growth not only in the sales of raw materials, but also processed goods, he said.

The information technology and energy, especially the alternative energy, are also important sectors of the economy, which have great growth potential, Groysman said.

Ukraine, once known as a breadbasket of Europe, has 42 million hectares of high-quality farmland suitable for growing grain and raising livestock.

The value of Ukraine's agricultural exports reached a record of 18.8 billion U.S. dollars last year.
