CHICAGO, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- U.S. automaker General Motors (GM) announced Monday that it will invest 36 million U.S. dollars in an assembly plant in central Michigan to fund future crossover production.
The Lansing Delta Township plant, about 150 km west of Detroit, currently builds the Chevrolet Traverse and Buick Enclave crossovers.
"We are proud of the hard work and commitment of the entire Lansing team and the Chevrolet Traverse and Buick Enclave are important products in our growing crossover portfolio," said GM Chairman and CEO Mary Barra during a visit to the plant.
"This investment will allow us to prepare the plant for future crossover production," she told local employees and community leaders.
Since 2009, GM has invested more than 600 million dollars in the Lansing Delta Township plant. For competitive reasons, GM said it will not disclose specifics or timing related to the plant's future products.
As consumers shifted their taste from passenger cars to SUVs, crossovers and pickups, the Detroit-based automaker said last year that it would end production at several sedan plants in the United States and Canada to adjust to the changing market and boost profits.
