At least 5 militants killed in raid in western Afghan province: official

HERAT, Afghanistan, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- At least five Taliban militants were killed and two narcotic-drug labs and a bomb-making factory were destroyed following a military operation in Afghanistan's western province of Herat overnight, authorities said Thursday.

"Afghan National Army's Special Operations Forces conducted an operation in Zir Koh district, Herat province last night. Upon arrival of security forces, a gunfight erupted resulting in five militants killed and four others wounded," Afghan army Corps 207 Zafar said in a statement.

Those among the injured was a Taliban commander named Amroddin Khan, the statement added.

Security force members, who were supported by the NATO-led coalition forces, also destroyed three militants' vehicles before returning to a military camp, the statement said.

Civilians and security personnel weren't hurt, the statement said.

Taliban militants haven't commented on the report yet.
