NEW DELHI, March 6 (Xinhua) -- A paramilitary trooper from India's Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) was killed Wednesday in a major fire at a government building which houses several important offices in Indian capital city, police said.

The fire broke out at the office of the Ministry of Social Justice in Delhi's CGO complex.

"We are being told a CISF sub-inspector deployed at the building as part of security was found unconscious and have suffered some burns because of the fire," a police official said.

"Though he was taken to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) hospital immediately, he succumbed there."

Authorities rushed over two dozen fire tenders and a contingent of firefighters to the spot to contain the blaze.

According to officials from the fire department, the fire started on the fifth floor from the office of the Social Justice Ministry.

"We were alerted in the morning at around 8:30 a.m. (local time)," an official said.

Eyewitnesses said the thick smoke and leaping flames were bellowing from the windows of the fifth floor.

CISF is a paramilitary wing mandated to provide security to major installations of India like nuclear installations, space establishments, airports, seaports, power plants, sensitive buildings, etc.

Officials said the cause of fire was being investigated.
