BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, March 12 (Xinhua) -- Brunei has established a new organization to aid in the sultanate's transformation into a "smart nation," a senior government official said on Tuesday.

Minister of Transport and Infocommunications Abdul Mutalib said the newly-established Digital Economic Consult will coordinate and play a special role in leading policies with regards to digital economy.

It will take over the roles and efforts of the Brunei Information Technology Consult which was established in 2000 to lead and drive ICT (information and communication technologies) development that is needed to achieve the sultanate's 2035 Vision, he said during Tuesday's Legislative Council meeting.

Abdul Mutalib said it is important for Brunei to provide the necessary telecommunications infrastructure and a stable telecommunications service to keep up with the fourth industry revolution, adding that the Digital Economic Consult was introduced to ensure that this is achieved at an affordable and reasonable price.

Brunei announced last month that it will consolidate network infrastructure of all existing telecommunication operators in the country under a newly formed company to spur the development of the sultanate's ICT sector.
