YAOUNDE, March 13 (Xinhua) -- The International Exhibition on Safety and Security in Central Africa sponsored by Cameroon's Ministry of Defense opened in the capital, Yaounde on Wednesday.

The exhibition, first of its kind, showcases the latest technological methods in fighting crime and terrorism.

"This type of initiative is laudable. We are aware that other countries are far advanced in this domain but we believe it's never too late to posit positive and useful actions. The government wishes that the exhibition becomes, in a few years, a major rendez-vous for security professionals and consumers." Joseph Beti Assomo, Cameroon's Defense Minister said at the start of the exhibition.

Central Africa is faced with growing security challenges and requires state of the art techniques to overcome the challenges, Assomo said.

"This exhibition gives us the possibility to, not only display what we have but seek to acquire the new techniques and create a synergy with other nations to fight crime," army officer, Jean Malou attending the exhibition told Xinhua.

The exhibition that is held under the theme "security and defense for development" will end on March 15.
