Election, law enforcement officials among 6 shot dead in Bangladesh's poll violence

DHAKA, March 18 (Xinhua) -- At least six persons including four law enforcers and an election official were shot dead and 16 others injured in Bangladesh's southeastern Chittagong Hill tracts on Monday.

Superintendent of Police in Rangamati district Alamgir Kabir told Xinhua via mobile phone that they came under attack after concluding a lcoal voting process at a polling center in the district, 391 km southeast of capital Dhaka.

"Unidentified criminals opened fire at the election officials at around 6:00 p.m. local time, leaving an election official, four members of Ansar (a paramilitary auxiliary force) and a driver dead on the spot and 16 others injured," said the officer.

No one has so far claimed responsibility and investigations are underway.
