MOMBASA, March 22 (Xinhua) -- A Kenyan tycoon was arrested with heroin worth 1.5 million shillings (about 15,000 U.S. dollars) here on Friday.

The drugs were seized from the car of Abdulmajid Mselem Timami by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.

The suspect, who owns a fleet of transport trucks operating within the east African region, has been involved in drug business for nearly a decade, a police officer who declined to be named told Xinhua.

Police suspect that the drugs wrapped in polythene bags and concealed in his new private car were to be delivered to local distributors.

"He is currently in police custody awaiting court appearance on Monday," said the police officer.

The port city of Mombasa has a big narcotic market, where underground drug barons including alleged prominent businessmen, politicians and security officials operate.

Mombasa has also been used as a gateway and an exit for narcotics as well as banned animal trophies and products, according to regulatory agencies.

The arrest is the latest in a series of seizures of hard drugs in the coastal city.
