KAMPALA, March 23 (Xinhua) -- Six people have been confirmed dead and eight others injured after two vehicles got involved in a Friday night accident in the Ugandan central district of Luwero, a police spokesperson said on Saturday.

Paul Kangave, police spokesperson for Savannah Region, told Xinhua by telephone that the accident happened when a lorry and a commuter taxi had a head-on collision.

"Preliminary reports point to reckless driving as the possible cause of the accident. The taxi driver tried to overtake from a prohibited place (sharp bend)," Kangave said.

The injured were rushed to a government hospital in Luwero.

Kangave advised motorists to avoid speeding, especially when approaching sharp bends.

Uganda registers about 20,000 accidents each year, with some 2,000 deaths, making it one of the countries with the highest road traffic death rates, according to police statistics.
