Uganda appoints Ghana's Kwesi to coach team at Under 17 AFCON

KAMPALA, March 20 (Xinhua) -- The Ugandan football governing body on Wednesday announced that it had appointed Ghana's Samuel Paa Kwesi Fabin to manage the national team at the Under 17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Championship slated to start on April 14 in Tanzania.

Moses Magogo, president Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) told reporters that Fabin has experience with Under 17 teams having coached the Ghana Under 17 national team.

"As FUFA, we have a mission of becoming the number one footballing nation in Africa both on and off the pitch," Magogo said as he unveiled the new coach.

"I am happy to come to Uganda for the first time and I am determined to work with the young players and get results. It is a short time to prepare for the Under 17 AFCON, but we shall do our best," said the new coach.

The experienced Ghana-born coach signed a one-year contract with Uganda and his first target will be to qualify the Uganda Cubs for the Under 17 World Cup to take place in Brazil this year.

Fabin who has handled several teams in the Ghana Premier League was last in charge of Ghana's team at the under 17 World Cup in India, where they reached the quarterfinals.

The new coach will have time to train with the team during a 10-day training camp in South Africa which starts on March 31. It will be the first time Uganda play at the Under 17 AFCON tournament.

The Under 17 AFCON tournament slated for April 14-28 in Tanzania will feature hosts Uganda, Nigeria, Angola, Senegal, Morocco, Guinea and Cameroon.
