DHAKA, March 25 (Xinhua) -- With Bangladesh celebrating its 49th Independence Day on March 26, police have tightened security measures in capital Dhaka and elsewhere in the country.

Additional law enforcement agencies' members have been deployed to strengthen surveillance especially in Dhaka's diplomatic Gulshan, Banani and Baridhara areas since Sunday afternoon after threats of militant attacks were reported.

Also on Monday, law enforcers were seen frisking people and setting up check-posts in Dhaka's key diplomatic zones.

Sources said foreign missions and clubs have been brought under the security blanket while hotels were asked to keep all details of their boarders.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on its official site said it has not issued an alert fearing attacks in Dhaka in light of the media reports.

Following heightened security, many foreign missions including those of the United States and Britain, issued security alert for their citizens living in the country.

A DMP official who preferred to be unnamed said there was no specific threat either to any specific establishment.

"Law enforcers were put on high alert specially in posh Dhaka areas though no threat exists."

Officials said security has been stepped up not merely in the diplomatic zones but elsewhere in Dhaka and other cities and towns to thwart any unwanted incident during Independence Day celebrations Tuesday.
