KHARTOUM, April 6 (Xinhua) -- The Sudanese police on Saturday announced that a protester was killed during protests in the capital Khartoum.

"The police recorded a report on death of a citizen during a riot at Al Arbaeen Street in Omdurman, along with other reports of injuries among both citizens and policemen," Hashim Abdel-Rahim, Sudanese police spokesman, said in a statement.

"The police deployed its forces in accordance with a precautionary plan adopted to confront any disorder or attacks on lives and private and public property that may occur during the gathering called for by opposition parties," he said.

According to the statement, no loss of properties was reported.

Earlier in the day, thousands of Sudanese protesters staged a demonstration toward the Sudanese army's general command in Khartoum.

Since Dec. 19 last year, Sudan has been witnessing protests over the deteriorating economic conditions and price hikes of basic commodities.
