Vienna Airport reports 24 pct y-on-y increase in passenger numbers

VIENNA, April 10 (Xinhua) -- Vienna International Airport registered a 23.9 percent year-on-year increase in passenger traffic in March serving almost 2.4 million people, its operator the Flughafen Wien Group said on Wednesday.

The number of local passengers increased by 27.5 percent and transfer passenger volume was up 10.4 percent.

Flight movements at Austria's largest airport, which serves as the hub for Austrian Airlines and Eurowings Europe and is also a base for low-cost carriers easyJet Europe, Lauda, Level and Wizz Air, were also up a substantial 16 percent year-on-year reaching almost 21,000.

The number of passengers flying to eastern Europe was up 29.1 percent, while that of western Europe-bound passengers was up 22.7 percent in March.

The number of passengers flying to destinations in the Middle East increased by 18.9 percent, and the respective figures were 17.8 percent for north America, 9.2 percent for Africa, and 8.4 percent for east Asia.

Passenger numbers increased less markedly at the two other airports operated by the Flughafen Wien Group: Malta Airport and Kosice Airport in Slovakia, where passenger numbers in March were up 1.3 percent and down 9.9 percent, respectively.
