CAIRO, April 11 (Xinhua) -- Egypt's police killed 11 militants in a shootout in the North Sinai's city of Arish, the interior ministry said Thursday.

"The national security forces spotted a base for terrorists in one of the residential buildings in Abu Eitah area in Arish," a ministry statement said.

The militants had planned a series of terrorist operations against vital properties and important figures in remote areas in Arish, the statement added.

Several weapons, ammunitions and explosive devices were seized during the raid.

On Tuesday, four policemen and three citizens were killed and 26 others wounded in a suicide bomb attack in the city of Sheikh Zuweid in North Sinai.

Egyptian security forces have been engaged in anti-terror campaigns since the ouster of former Islamist President Mohamed Morsi in 2013.

Terror attacks, which have killed hundreds of soldiers and policemen in Egypt, have gradually expanded from its main center in North Sinai to other provinces including the capital Cairo.
