MUMBAI, April 18 (Xinhua) -- India's SpiceJet is set to induct six more Boeing 737-800 NG aircraft on dry lease, according to a company release on Thursday.
The six aircraft were in addition to the 16 Boeing 737s and five Q400s that the airline will soon induct in the immediate future, the release said.
The announcement came a day after India's beleaguered airline Jet Airways temporarily suspended its operations.
Commenting on the development, Ajay Singh, chairman and managing director of SpiceJet said "we are taking all possible proactive measures to deal with the sudden reduction of aviation capacity in the Indian market. SpiceJet continues to work closely with the government and regulatory authorities to help minimize passenger inconvenience."
The airline has applied to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation for a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to import the planes, the release said.
SpiceJet operates 516 average daily flights to 60 destinations, including 51 domestic and nine international ones. The airline has a fleet of 48 Boeing 737, 27 Bombardier Q400s and one Boeing 737 freighter.
