Greek conservatives lead in European parliament elections, national ballot: survey

ATHENS, April 19 (Xinhua) -- Greek conservatives of the main opposition New Democracy (ND) party lead over the ruling Radical Left SYRIZA party, in the latest opinion poll on voters' intentions regarding the upcoming May elections for the European parliament and the general elections which will be held later this year.

Should ballots for the European parliament be held this Sunday, ND would win with 27.2 percent of votes, while SYRIZA would garner 19.9 percent, according to a survey conducted by Metron Analysis polling firm that was presented on local Alpha television channel on Thursday night.

The center Left Movement of Change (KINAL) would rank third with 6.6 percent of votes, followed by the Communist Party KKE with 5.8 percent and the far Right Chryssi Avghi (Golden Dawn) party with 4.6 percent of votes.

Regarding the general elections in Greece, ND would receive 28.8 percent of votes, SYRIZA 21 percent, KINAL 6.7, Golden Dawn 5.1 and KKE 5 percent of votes.

The term of the current government ends in autumn this year and Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has repeatedly said that the next national elections will be held in October 2019.
