Magnitude-5.5 earthquake rattles southern Philippines

MANILA, April 26 (Xinhua) -- The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) revised the magnitude of the earthquake that struck Surigao del Norte in the southern Philippines on Friday to 5.5 from the earlier magnitude of 5.3.

In an updated bulletin, the institute said the strong quake, which struck at 1:26 p.m. local time, was detected at a depth of 11 km, 70 km southeast of General Luna town.

The institute detected at least 21 aftershocks, including a magnitude-5 tremor that struck at 2:04 p.m. local time with a depth of 3 km.

The tremor was also felt in Gingoog City and Suirgao City, also in Mindanao region in the southern Philippines.

The institute said the tremor, which was tectonic in origin, is not expected to cause any damage. However, it said that aftershocks may be expected.

The Philippines is an earthquake-prone country, registering quakes every day, though most are not felt.
