Ireland's April new private car sales up by nearly 20 pct

DUBLIN, May 11 (Xinhua) -- A total of 13,794 new private cars were sold in Ireland in April, up by 19.4 percent compared to the April 2018 figure which stood at 11,557 units, according to the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) of Ireland.

Of all the new private cars sold in the month, Nissan was the most popular make whose April sales stood at 1,498 units, followed by Volkswagen (1,418), Toyota (1,386), Skoda (1,176) and Renault (988), said the CSO, adding that the combined sales of the top five car makes accounted for 46.9 percent of the country's total sales of new private cars in April.

During the first four months of this year, the sales of new private cars in Ireland totalled 64,655 units, a decrease of 7.6 percent compared with the same period last year, said the CSO, adding that 47.8 percent of the new private cars sold in the period were diesel-powered.

The CSO figures also showed that a total of 8,728 used private cars were sold in Ireland in April, bringing to 34,634 units the total sales of such vehicles in the country during the January-April period, which represented a year-on-year rise of 3.8 percent.
