NAIROBI, May 17 (Xinhua) -- Kenya aims to increase access to broadband coverage of 3G to 94 percent of the population by 2020, officials announced on Friday.

Joe Mucheru, cabinet secretary for information, communications and technology (ICT) said the deed will also increase digital literacy in schools to 85 percent in addition to expanding broadband connectivity across the country to attain 50 percent digital literacy amongst the workforce.

"Broadband is expected to facilitate connections that will create opportunities for smart solutions that will help in transforming Kenyans' lives regardless of their location and thus enable societal and economic benefits of digital transformation to be realized," Mucheru said during the opening ceremony of the annual ICT forum in Nairobi.

Mucheru said the government has in recent years embarked on a number of initiatives geared towards stimulating ICT infrastructure investment and deployment.

"Key among them is public investment in the expansion of the broadband fiber optic connectivity to virtually all regions of the country, which since 2013 my ministry has facilitated in laying over 6,000km of national optic fiber infrastructure network in all the 47 counties," he said.
