TRIPOLI, May 17 (Xinhua) -- The UN International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) on Friday said that it will provide awareness on unexploded ordnance to nearly 40,000 Libyan children and their families in different cities.
"Under the guidance of Libyan Mine Action Center, education on mine risk will be carried out at community and school levels with awareness campaign through media channels," UNICEF said in a statement.
"Unexploded ordnance presents a serious threat and has immediate and lifelong effects on children and their caregivers that can be avoided through education and awareness," the statement said.
The education campaign is supported by the European Union, the statement added.
Years of armed conflicts in Libya have left large amounts of unexploded ordnance, which has killed and injured many soldiers and civilians.
