LONDON, May 24 (Xinhua) -- British retail sales rose by 5.2 percent in April 2019, compared with the same period one year earlier, according to figures released Friday by Office for National Statistics(ONS).

Data showed that the quantity bought in April rose by 5.2 percent year-on-year, with growth across all sectors except household goods.

In the three months to April 2019, the quantity bought rose by 1.8 percent, compared with the previous three months, with strong growth of 9.4 percent in non-store retailing.

On the monthly basis, the quantity bought growth in April was flat, with online retailing accounting for 18.7 percent of total retailing.

Rhian Murphy, Head of Retail Sales in ONS, said: "retail growth was strong in the three months to April with a record quarter for the online sector, driven mainly by clothing purchases, with warmer weather boosting sales. Elsewhere, department stores continued to see their sales fall."
