MALE, May 30 (Xinhua) -- The new Maldives parliament convened for its first regular sitting on Wednesday evening after President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's Maldivian Democratic Party won the April parliamentary elections, local media reported Thursday.

On Tuesday night, lawmakers convened for a special parliamentary session where former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed was elected as the new parliament speaker.

Maldivian Democratic Party MP Eva Abdulla was elected deputy speaker, becoming the second female in the island country to serve in the post.

When the parliament convened on Wednesday for its first regular session under the new government, a resolution was passed on inviting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address the Maldives parliament during an upcoming visit on June 7-8.

Legislators also agreed to meet with the media twice a week to give information on the work being done by the parliament.

The Maldivian Democratic Party won the parliamentary elections in April, winning 65 out of the 87 seats in the parliament.
