OTTAWA, June 2 (Xinhua) -- A tornado ripped through the eastern area of Canadian capital city Ottawa on Sunday evening, tearing off roofs and bringing down trees, authorities said.

According to Environment Canada, the wind has torn off roofs and uprooted trees in Ottawa's east end with strewn debris forcing the closure of several streets, including a highway. But by 9 p.m. local time (0100 GMT on Monday), the affected roads were all reopened.

Ottawa police said that no injuries were reported though there are many uprooted trees and damaged houses in the area.

The Canadian capital city has still been in a state of emergency over floods since earlier this spring.

Days ealier, destructive tornados have also swept large parts of the United States. Till Friday, there have been an average of 27.5 tornadoes occurring each day in the country neighboring Canada in past 13 days, said the U.S. authorities.
